St. Mary Magdalene 10th anniversary Banner

When Fr. Jim Hedman asked me to make a banner to be carried in the procession at Bishop Dabney Smith’s consecration I was flattered. Someone suggested I collaborate with Pete Nye. I was looking for suggestions for symbols to include on the banner and  Pete suggested using Marguerita Farmer’s watercolor image of the Church. I liked the idea and had it printed it on artists canvas. When it arrived, I asked Fr. Jim when the church was established. He told me that it was early December 1997, during Advent and it was this fact which dictated the purple color for the banner. While still at the office we ordered the banner fabric and the backing/lining fabric as well as gold fringe.

Cropping the painting  to show it off well on the banner was the next problem and using the Fibonacci sequence, it is based on a 2:3 proportion which makes it fit well within the field of the banner.

Several hours were spent auditioning fonts and Per Gothic was chosen for the Gold metallic "St. Mary Magdalene" and the Carleton font for "Bradenton" and "1997".

My collaboration with Pete Nye resulted in additional cropping of the painting  and I was thinking about curving the the lines containing "St Mary Magdalene" but I  decided against that option as being too complicated given lack of time, and so the night before the consecration "St. Mary Magdalene" was embroidered on straight lines directly on the banner fabric.

Initially the end tabs for hanging the banner were omitted , this was because I wasn’t sure what the width of the carrier would be. Now that the carrier has been defined, the tabs have been added. In the end the fringe was left off. I think the beauty of this banner is its’ simplicity and it is complete as is. It’s been a rewarding experience and I enjoyed it. I’ve a few more banner ideas for the future.
